Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of a Security Officer II, DOJ, this position is assigned to one of three shifts in a 24-hour operation to provide security at a Department of Justice facility. This position has limited peace officer powers as defined in the California Penal Code, section 830.4, which includes the powers of arrest. The incumbent will carry a firearm, baton, pepper spray, and any other safety equipment as required by the Department, and only while on duty.

Please note, all new to state employees will be given the minimum salary of the classification $4,969. For current state employees and/or those with reinstatement rights, your salary will be determined in accordance with the applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

This position may be entitled to the Hiring Above Minimum Authorization (HAM), Section 5.


EDUCATION INCENTIVE

Employees in the Bargaining Unit 7 may be eligible for the following:
  • 2.5% of the employee’s base pay for an Associates of Science/Arts or an Intermediate POST certificate.
  • 5% of the employee's base pay for an Bachelor of Arts or Science or an Advanced POST Certificate (or equivalent).

Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, and demonstrate good judgment when interacting with employees and members of the public. Work well under pressure and remain professional in difficult situations. Ability to work both independently and as a team member; carry out prescribed tasks with minimal supervision; be a self-starter, flexible, and have a positive attitude.

The desirable candidate should have a minimum of one year of experience in one or a combination of the following:
  • As a building guard, watchperson, or a police officer; 
  • In any branch of the armed services performing security-related duties.
