Job Description

The Preanalytical Assistant Supervisor assists in the administrative and technical functions for the Pre-Analytical area(s) of the Laboratory. Responsible for the training of Laboratory Technicians. Coordinates daily operations of the section to provide quality laboratory services.

  • Supervises laboratory technicians in the performance of all work assignments and coordination of services with other laboratory sections.
  • Trains, coordinates, evaluates and supervises personnel in the performance of all procedures and testing in accordance with the protocols contained in the procedure manuals.
  • Reviews procedure manuals and ensures procedures are reviewed by the Administrative Supervisor and Pathologist per department protocol.
  • As assigned, trains other medical personnel within the DCH Health Care System in laboratory pre-analytical protocol and techniques. May train/re-educate physician office staff, nursing home staff, or other Outreach clients who utilize DCH laboratory services to perform specimen collection and specimen handling
  • Monitors punctuality and timeliness of employee arrival, breaks and meal times to ensure working areas are staffed appropriately. Assists in performing time and attendance management.
  • Assists the Administrative Supervisor and/or Preanalytical Technical Specialist in directing, assigning and scheduling personnel in such a manner as to achieve high levels of productivity while continuing to provide timely and accurate services. Works to maximize scheduling of personnel, integration of workflow with the diagnostic sections and communications with internal and external customers.
  • Assists the Administrative Supervisor and Laboratory Management in the overall daily operation of the section and in reviewing budgets, variances, strategic planning, goal definition, problem resolution and equipment acquisition.
  • Assists in maintaining records to comply with pertinent regulatory agencies.
  • Assists in ordering of supplies and inventory control.
  • Ensures operations coincide with the strategic goals of the campus and DCH Health Care System.
  • Reviews professional journals, attends workshops, seminars and lectures to remain current in technical knowledge.
  • Communicates issues and concerns with laboratory leadership, employees and customers through appropriate media; regular staff meetings, memorandums, email, and direct conversation.
  • Helps coordinate technical support and/or guidance to other laboratories within the DCH Health System.
  • Assures section and personnel compliance with fire, safety, infection control and all other hospital regulations and practices according to policies and procedures.

Minimum education is high school degree. Associate degree or higher is preferred. At least three years of experience in laboratory preanalytics required. A phlebotomy certification by a nationally recognized organization (ASPT, NCA, ASCP or AMT) and previous leadership experience preferred.

Abilities are demonstrated in areas of assigned responsibilities by successful completion of annual laboratory competency testing. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must possess manual dexterity and fine motor skills. Able to stand, walk, and sit for long periods of

time, reach and bend. Is able to lift a maximum of 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing

up to 20 pounds. Vision and hearing must be normal or corrected to within normal. Normal color vision for those tasks requiring color differentiation.

Includes exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals and hazardous material. Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment. Physical presence on site is essential. Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Frequent interaction with others in the Laboratory and other departments in person, by telephone or by email, to resolve issues with patient care that are impacted by laboratory testing. Due to the emotional and/or emergency nature of patient care some customers may be unpleasant, angry or discourteous in their requests for Laboratory services.
